The speakers made the day a hugely enjoyable and informative experience. Martin Earlham Senior Engineer from the Department of the Environment kicked off with a unique insight into the historical background, original concept based on gas valve design and building of the Thames Barrier that contained much interesting information together with slides about the proliferation and complexity of flood defence barriers around the world.

We took our first tea break in the Thames Barrier Exhibition Centre and so were privileged to have a private walk round the exhibits.

Jo Harris, Head of Facilities Engineering, for BISRIA absorbed us all with an interesting presentation about the foundation and growth of BISRIA and the technical research, services, products and markets that it delivers to clients worldwide. This talk promoted a healthy questions and answers session about the availability of information to engineers in our business sector. An excellent buffet lunch taken in balmy warm weather on the terraces overlooking the Barrier. Steve Crocker from REFCOM delivered an impassioned and informative talk about the evolving structure and implementation of certification and accreditation issues and the impact of legislation initiatives on companies involved with refrigeration companies not only in the UK but also giving comparisons with the rest of Europe. We took advantage of another break in the weather to take afternoon tea on the terrace. Reg Cross, Managing Director for Nationwide Filters, gave a most compelling in depth talk about the history, environmental purpose, research, design, testing, manufacture and diversity of air filters and the comparative affects of the applicable standards both in the UK and Europe with a dramatic conclusion as to the options and decisions over filter choice and cost versus operational efficiency and energy saving.
